Technology

What We Do

Es BioSolutions is a consumer products company based on a biotechnology foundation that was developed, and that has been fine-tuned, over millions of years by the chief scientist of all time, Mother Nature. We take advantage of this phenomenon by mimicking Mother Nature, using fermentation and extracting key materials that are fundamental to protecting living cells and applying them to skin care. This core technology is the development of certain biochemicals that are designed to help improve inflammatory skin conditions that includes the relief of itch with topically applied products. Conditions with proven efficacy include eczema, acne, hemorrhoids, athlete’s foot, dandruff and others.  There are large unmet needs in the consumer marketplace to treat such conditions without negative side effects and at affordable costs. Es BioSolutions has solutions to meet those needs. The same technology should be applicable for use on animals.

Superior Extracts - SPR+™ & Fermentation

The key family of ingredients in our products are what we call SPR+™ Fermentation Extracts, which are natural proteins, peptides and derivatives that are extracted from our fermentation process using Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast. We refine and retain useful materials from the fermentation that further synergize with ingredients used in skin care products.  Additionally, we developed techniques to remove certain materials from our extract mixture that may be antagonistic.  It is a targeted mixture of essential constituents from the fermentation.  And, the chemistry of the mixture is exactly as nature intended, where we have not chemically altered the materials.

Fermentation is a natural process that has been around since the beginning of life. Fermentation is used today to produce products that range from pharmaceuticals, to probiotics, to beer and wine.  Es BioSolutions combines this natural, ancient process and adds our technology, a directed fermentation and extraction, to create special extract mixtures and apply them into skin care.

The Science – Mechanisms of Action

Cells in the body respond to environmental or systemic stimuli with a series of protective measures that emanate from the body’s immune response mechanisms, some of which result in the generation of itch. In the area of itch, there are numerous metabolic pathways that can induce an itch response.  Moreover, by inhibiting the cell signaling sites that induce the itch, an inhibitory compound can reduce or even block completely the sensation of itch.

Histamine is a molecule that the body produces in response to certain stimuli. It affects 4 different cell signaling sites, 2 of which are known to be involved with itch, Histamine 1 Receptor and Histamine 4 Receptor, H1R and H4R. The classic “antihistamines” that you purchase at the local pharmacy are largely H1R inhibitors. H1R inhibitors (antihistamines) can work well for certain acute itch conditions, such as allergic reactions to bug bites or plant allergies. They are, however, not effective for chronic itch conditions, such as eczema and atopic dermatitis.

On the other hand, H4R was found to be involved in the sensation of itch in chronic, inflammatory skin conditions.  H4R inhibitors are currently under investigation as a potential treatment for the more severe and moderate cases of chronic inflammatory conditions, where itch is a major symptom.

Another family of cell signaling molecules are cytokines. One group of cytokines are called interleukins, IL for short. They are numbered IL-x, where x defines a particular type of interleukin. Inhibitors of interleukin cell signaling are in development as drug targets for a wide variety of inflammatory conditions, related to both skin and to systemic, or autoimmune, diseases.

There are several IL-related treatments, which are either available, or are under investigation regarding the treatment of itch.  IL-4 and IL-13 inhibition is the reported mechanism of action for an injected drug, Dupixent® that targets eczema/atopic dermatitis. IL-31 is another receptor site reported to be involved with itch. Clinical trials are currently under way using an IL-31 inhibitor for treating moderate to severe eczema and itch.  IL-17 inhibition is the reported mechanism of action for Cosentyx® (Novartis) in the treatment of psoriasis.  Other cytokines that are involved in the immune response with potential impact on eczema include IL-1, IL-2, IL-22 and IL-33.

Interleukin inhibitors have been shown to be effective in treating a number of conditions. Due to their high cost and numerous adverse side effects, they are generally used only for the more severe and moderately severe conditions.

SPR+™ Fermentation Extracts have been found to have inhibitory effects on H1R, H4R, IL-1, IL-4, IL-13, IL-17, IL-22, IL-31, IL-33, as well as TNF-α and Interferon-ɤ.  The tests for these effects of SPR+™ were conducted only on live cells in the lab.  SPR+™ has not yet been tested for its mechanism of action in humans or animals.  For this reason we do not claim that SPR+™ is acting in the same manner as the drugs which have reported specific mechanisms of action, even though SPR+™ has similar in-vitro (i.e., in the lab) effects.  It is merely noted as an interesting feature.

Furthermore, we have found that SPR+® extracts have anti-oxidant features.  This is yet an additional benefit, as anti-oxidants are useful in helping to protect the skin from oxidative stress from environmental factors.

Finally, SPR+™ extracts, as of yet, have not been found to have any negative side effects when applied topically to the skin.

A Note On Animals

As noted above, the extracts are applicable for use in animal products for similar applications. Yeast genetics have been largely preserved into the animal kingdom through evolution and therefore the same extract materials that work on humans should work on animals. We have limited tests on animals, but the science speaks to a high probability of efficacy.  In addition, we have found they have a superb ability to remove odors, both endogenous and exogenous odors from animals. Anybody who lets their dog run freely can attest to their natural instinct to camouflage themselves in smelly odors. Our extracts can efficiently remove those odors.
